Dicey Dungeons is a roguelike, dice placement game.
This is my playthrough and review.
Escape the cruel whims of Lady Luck in Dicey Dungeons! Learn to master six different characters, each with their own unique playstyles
Dicey Dungeons Game Play
In summary, you’re exploring a dungeon of various wacky encounters while also fighting using a dice placement mechanism.
Theme
The game is set up as a game show, Running Man style. This is why you’re running a dungeon and doing what you’re doing.
All the characters are crazy and wacky and a lot of fun as are the weird situations you find yourself in.
Visuals
Erm… They look like they made a prototype of a board game, decided to turn it into a video game then didn’t bother to update the visuals.
I mean, the characters look cool, I like that look. But the cards and dice are really plain and boring.
UI & Ease of Play
One bonus of the fact it looks like they forgot to update the graphics is that everything is clear. You can clearly see the effects and what is needed. The paths you follow around the dungeon are clear too.
It’s very easy to play but not so easy to play well which is always a good thing.
Dicey Dungeons Summary
Positives
I do like dice placement games and this has loads of it. Planning how well to spend the dice you have each turn is a fun game.
It’s a nice, simple game with roguelike elements to keep each run fresh.
The different mix of equipment means each run can have its subtleties. You have limited room for equipment so planning how to arrange this in your play area so you have options is great.
The mix of characters really adds to the variability and keeps the game interesting.
Negatives
That plain boring look…
Not good enough as a video game.
Summary
It’s going to be difficult for games that try to copy board game mechanisms so closely, without including the enhancements a video game can provide and compete. When you’re up against games like Monster Train it’s going to be difficult to compete with my video game time.
Even Monster Train isn’t exactly going to get much play time ahead of real video games like The Last of Us or Destruction All-Stars. There is always the digital version of Sagrada if I fancy something with a bit of dice placement.
But the dice placement and activating abilities are fun. Trying to survive the dungeon for as long as possible is fun. The wacky and crazy world is fun.
But, the variety of the characters and the increasing difficulty after winning a run means I actually play this quite a bit! It’s a very fun game.
