Town 77 First Impressions

Town 77 Box

Town 77 has players play tiles into a weirdly shaped town.

Can you play with fewer tiles than your opponents?

The residents of Town 77 — located just down the road from Town 66, mind you — can’t stand it when houses with the same shape or color are lined up with each other. Try to build as many houses as you can while keeping in mind which houses in your hand can be built at the end.

Town 77 Game Overview

Quick Rules Summary

Players play a tile into a grid and then MAY draw a tile. If they don’t draw they play with fewer tiles for the rest of the game.

When placing a tile, a tile of the same colour and/or pattern can not be in the same row or column.

How do you win?

If a player is unable to play but play is able to continue, they are eliminated. But if a player plays their final tile they win. If all players fail to play the player that has the fewest tiles in hand wins.

This end game is confusing and I couldn’t find a rulebook online to check.

Town 77 Components

Main Mechanisms

Pattern building with a bit of hand management. The first is how the game works and the latter is how you win.

USP

This is a remake of Town 66 also from Oink Games so it can’t be said there is a unique aspect to this game.

Theme

No idea. I won’t even try to make one up.

Setup

Give each person a wooden rail, mix the tokens in a bag, then players draw 4 and that is all.

Components & Artwork

The wooden rails are nice and the tokens are OK. There are marks on the bottom of the cards to help people understand the colours which is cool.

Ease of Teaching

Very easy to teach the game, however, the end game takes some understanding.

Similar Games

Town 66 obviously…

There is a fair bit in common with Qwirkle in the pattern building and overall look.

Town 77 Review

Positives

Very simple gameplay with few rules to teach.

As the game goes on you want to have fewer tiles in hand but at the same time, the number of available placements decreases which makes for tough decisions.

Tiny little box as you would expect from Oink Games.

Negatives

The end game is quite confusing.

Summary

Cheap, small box, few rules, good fun, what more could you ask for?
