Sushi Go Party! First Impressions
In Sushi Go Party you draft Sushi in the hope of having the best Sushi.
Sushi.
An expanded version of the best-selling card game Sushi Go!, is a party platter of mega maki, super sashimi, and endless edamame. You still earn points by picking winning sushi combos, but now you can customize each game by choosing à la carte from a menu of more than twenty delectable dishes. What’s more, up to eight players can join in on the sushi-feast. Let the good times roll!
Sushi Go Party! Game Play
The game has variable setups which I think are called “Menus”. This lets you know which cards are in the game. So you shuffle them all together and deal some out to each player.
Players will each select one and place it face down then they are revealed simultaneously. The cards are then passed left and this continues until all the cards are played, and then players score.
Cards score in different ways depending on the type of Sushi. Some are flat-out points, others set collection and others score for a majority among all the players.
Some, like the Spoon and Chopsticks, have effects you can use to manipulate the hand you’re drafting.
After each round all but the Desserts and reshuffled and redealt. At the end of the game, Desserts then score. The most points win.
Theme
Sushi! No, no theme.
Setup
The book has suggested setups for the cards so you need to find the right ones to add to the Menu. Then you have to dig through the decks to find the right cards and shuffle.
Looks like a bit of a pain, to be honest.
Components & Artwork
The mainboard and the cards seem to be nice. The game comes in a tin which is far from desirable.
The art is as cute as always.
Ease of Teach & Accessibility
It’s very simple. The Sushi themselves are straightforward and that mainboard acts as a decent reminder.
The Spoon and Chopsticks were awkward but not too difficult.
100% a family-friendly game.
Sushi Go Party! Summary
It’s a quick fun game but there is a problem. If I want to play a drafting game I’ll almost always want to play 7 Wonders, it’s one of my favourite games of all time.
If I want to play something quicker with a simpler setup than that I have Nevermore. This game has a rule with the Ravens that’s tough to explain, like the Chopsticks.
So it’s a nice simple game., but a little too simple for me. (But it is FUN and that’s what matters.)
