Scream: The Game Game Overview
Quick Rules Summary
Players take turns drawing or trading cards in order to get a hand of cards that will allow them to discard the right cards to complete their scenario. Then they draw another scenario card.
Every so often, Ghostface will call on an app to give a player a task or to ask a player to discard cards.
How do you win?
Ghostface can kill people if they are unable to have the required cards when Ghostface calls back after giving a direction.
Complete all of the scenarios first to win the game.
Main Mechanisms
Set collection in a real-time game. It’s also very cooperative as you need to get cards to players to stop Ghostface from killing them and ending the game.
USP
This comes from the movie tie-in. But also, adding the player’s names to an app and having Ghostface call you is really good fun.
Theme
Game-wise there isn’t much theme here other than the calls from Ghostface. There are items and locations from the film named in the game. But other than that it’s just a quick, fun game with Scream crowbarred in a bit.
Setup
Lay stuff out. The longest part is adding everyone’s name into the app.
Components & Artwork
The app looks nice and the little Ghostface mini is cool.
The art is very clean which helps with the speed element of the game. You can clearly see the item the card represents and how many Ghostface cards you have in your hand.
The cards are given a unique colour but if you’re colour-blind this won’t help at all, especially at the speed you need to recognise the cards.
Ease of Teaching
The base rules are easy. But as with any real-time game, everyone better know what they’re doing before the game starts.
Similar Games
Any real-time game. Spaceteam is the one it reminds me of the most, probably because I played Scream with the same group.
Scream: The Game Review
Positives
Fun, real-time gameplay.
It’s a real thrill when the phone rings, especially when your name comes up.
It’s nice and simple which is needed for a quick, real-time game.
Negatives
The app was really quiet, not sure if it was the app or a technical issue. (The volume was on max and was otherwise working fine.)
It’s really expensive (£50+ for a £20 RRP) due to it never being released in the UK and there not being many copies on the second-hand market.
Summary
A fun, simple game with a cool gimmick that I would like on my shelf, if I could get it cheaper.
