Piña Coladice First Impressions

Piña Coladice Box

Piña Coladice is a Yahtzee style dice game.

Anyone for a drink?

Roll the dice up to three times to claim one of the available combinations on coasters. Position yourself strategically with your cocktail tokens before your opponents.

Piña Coladice Game Overview

Quick Rules Summary

There are 12 double-sided mats laid out in a 4×4 grid.

Players take turns rolling the 5 dice with 2 rerolls.

If the final result fulfils one of the criteria on a mat, and it has a free space they put one of their tokens on it. You score the points shown in the space, plus a bonus point for each orthogonally adjacent mat containing one of your tokens.

How do you win?

When a player gets to 20 points or places all of their tokens, players play even turns and the player with the most points wins.

Or, if a player places 4 tokens in a row across the grid of mats they win instantly.

Main Mechanisms

The Yahtzee dice mechanism is the main mechanism that drives the game.

Theme

Hmmm, feel like the name came first before the game.

Setup

Shuffle the 25 coasters and lay out 12. Then you flip some over for the player count to the side with a yellow dot in the bottom left. I THINK this side has more spaces to place tokens to account for the higher number of players. That’s it!

Components & Artwork

The dice are quite nice and the player ‘cocktail’ tokens are fun and unique.

The graphic design for the points and required combinations makes sense. The art is unusual but works for me.

Ease of Teaching

As with any game with a familiar mechanism, it’s easy to teach.

Piña Coladice Review

Positives

Fun and familiar gameplay.

Choices fo rerolls narrow as the game goes on and your available space becomes more limited and it starts to feel more focused.

When someone is close to an instant win, it’s fun as th other players desperately try to block them.

Negatives

Very luck-based.

It is what it is.

Summary

Luck aside, this is a very fun and simple game you can play at the start, in the middle or at the end of a day of gaming.
