You know, I REALLY wanted to like this game. It has a tonne of things I like. Accomplishing multiple goals at the same time, drafting, pattern building, variable turn order which determines how much you can do…
Sounds great.
I loved my first play, but future plays? Not so much.
The problem is, it’s very repetitive.
While all the individual mechanisms work well it’s just the same thing over and over. It doesn’t get more interesting the longer the game goes, it just feels flat.
There’s a fine balance to try and achieve in this kind of game. Loads of games have you do the same thing over and over but some games work, some do not.
Nevermore is a drafting game where you draft a hand of cards and play them out, and so is Sushi Go. But I can play Nevermore over and over, Sushi Go? Not so much.
I’m not sure if there is a direct comparison for Pyramids for me. Maybe the closet is Roll Player? You draft turn order but also what you need for the round. Then you place the die, rinse repeat.
It’s essentially the same type of game.
You do the same thing turn after turn after turn. But you know what? The difference between games like Roll Player and Pyramids? The secret ingredient that I have no idea how to recreate…
It isn’t dull but it isn’t special.
