Guns & Steel – A Civilization Card Game First Impressions

Guns & Steel is a hand management Civ building game.

This is a quick video overview.

Technology is a double-edged sword.

We have grown accustomed to the comforts of civilization, but at the same time we are always creating bigger bloodier methods of destruction.

Will you focus on civil developments to speed up production, or will you build powerful armies to lay waste to your enemies?
Do you build wonders that leaves a permanent heritage for mankind, or do you want to seize it from those who are not worthy?

This is a brief overview of the rules then I give my thoughts on the game.

Guns & Steel Update July 2018

A year later and I don’t remember this game much. I do know I sold it pretty much straight away after the first play. Later, I then played The Flow of History which is another game from Jesse Li, I didn’t like that either!

But I don’t remember anything positive about Guns & Steel at all! Just this overwhelming sensation of frustration that looms over the name of this game.

Ok, well I do remember the card flipping mechanism being quite good. Cards are double-sided with an ability on one side and a resource on the back. You have to decide if you want to use a card for the resource, or the ability.

This did lead to some interesting and unique gameplay if I’m honest. But the whole package just failed for me. Come to think of it, it did for everyone around the table so at least I wasn’t alone.

This version of Guns & Steel comes with 2 versions of the game. We played both and we got the same result… both left us with a sour taste.

These games just don’t do it for me sadly. Luckily it wasn’t just me, the other people didn’t like it either. The Flow of History was received better by the people I played with though so maybe give that a try as well.

Best to give this a miss as though it’s cheap and small it’s not really worth it.
