DVONN Board Game First Impressions
Another GIPF game…
I actually won!
DVONN is played on an elongated hexagonal board, with 23 White, 23 Black and 3 Red DVONN-pieces.
It sure is…
The board starts off empty and players take turns placing pieces on the board starting with the 3 DVONN pieces.
Then you take you takes turns moving pieces. The only rule is you can only move a piece of your colour. But it can’t be surrounded by spaces equal to the size of its stack, moving it onto other pieces.
So, in the beginning, you move 1 piece from the edge of the board, one space Placing it on top of one other piece. (of any colour, even DVONN pieces) Next turn, you can move that piece but you have to move it 2 spaces etc etc
As gaps in the board appear, some pieces might be separated from a DVONN piece and if so those are returned to the box.
If a player can’t make a move the other player keeps making moves until they can’t make any moves and the game will end.
DVONN Summary
The players put the stacks they control on top of each other and the one with the highest stack is the winner.
Out of YINSH, TZARR and GIPF this was my favourite and not just ’cause I won this time 🙂 It’s the easiest to play. It’s the only one of the games I could see myself playing over and over, back to back.
But still, it’s a nice game with quality components as always.
Update June 2018
As far as two-player abstract games go, Kamisado is still my favourite. It’s also my favourite of the GIPF series and the only one I see as fun and replayable. By that I mean it’s nice to play multiple games in a row. The others in the series are VERY taxing but this one, not so much.
I’m not saying it’s easy though 🙂
