Dice City has a city and dice…
It all checks out.
The Kingdom of Rolldovia is in turmoil. Her royal highness, the Queen, has decreed that there will be a new capital after the old one was sacked by hordes of barbarians and bandits from the south. As leaders of one of the country’s influential noble families, players vie with each other to establish their provincial city as the best home for Rolldovia’s new capital. You must choose your city’s path in gaining the approval of all others in the kingdom.
In Dice City, Everyone starts with a player board and 5 dice. You roll the dice and place them on the column matching the number and the row matching the colour.
On your turn, you remove the dice from your board one at a time to take one of a couple of available actions.
The most common action is to activate the building the die was on. These buildings give you one of the 3 available resources, attack strength, points etc
Another action is to move one die remaining on your board left or right one space, moving it to a different building.
Building
Once you have activated all of your dice you can build. There are cards in the middle of the table and you trade in resources to take those cards and cover the basic building on your board.
There are also Trade ships that you ‘buy’ with resources and Bandits that you defeat with your combat strength, both worth endgame victory points.
When a number of the decks of cards have emptied in the middle of the table the game ends.
The Trade Ships, Bandits and Buildings you have give you points on top of any points tokens you earned during the game, most points win.
Positives
Very easy to play and quite strategic.
Adding buildings to your board is good fun. You need to look for ones to build and then decide where to put them on your board. How you do this is up to you depending on how you want to play the game this time.
The art is nice and cute.
Negatives
Very hard to plan well. You can…but it takes a lot of time. For example, the first card you buy in the game goes on 1 of your 36 spaces… Will you roll the right number on the correct colour die to get it? Doubtful…
Depending on the player, turns can be slow. You look at what’s available to buy, which resources you have, which resources you could get now, which resources you could get if you move a die etc Lot’s to consider which is good but can be too much at times for what is a fairly light game.
Would be better as a deck builder IMO.
Dice City Summary
Rolling dice to activate buildings is quite common with Space Base leading the way for me.
Not terrible, but not that good either.
