Disney Animated First Impressions
Disney Animated has players create beautiful Disney scenes.
But can they do it before the evil villains make them run out of time?
Work together in Disney Animated like the team at the famous Walt Disney Animation Studios to create movie magic!
Disney Animated Game Overview
Quick Rules Summary
Players are trying to cooperatively fill in their board with colour, get the characters on their board and complete their overall goal before times run out. These boards refer to a scene from a Disney film.
Actions are taken using an action selection system like in Ark Nova and Civilisation but obviously, these actions are shared between all players.
While doing this, there is a rotating cast of baddies who are the antagonist of the player’s characters will trigger. They will do nasty things like make players discard resources or cards and will advance the time.
To help out, each player has a special ability related to their scene.
How do you win?
If all players complete their objectives they win. If time runs out, the players lose.
Main Mechanisms
The co-op action selection is the two main mechanisms folded into one. There is also a bit of hand management and variable player powers.
USP
This mix of mechanisms is certainly unique. the theme of painting out a Disney scene and populating it with characters is fun.
Theme
I’m not sure how you are drawing these characters into the game while the baddies are stopping them works as a theme… But it does.
This was the second of 3 Disney games I played at UK Games Expo 23.
Setup
Each player gets their own components with each of the player’s baddies put in a stack. There are other bits and bobs like tokens representing tins of paint on a board.
Components & Artwork
The standard components are still pretty good.
The wooden bits, the Cheshire Cat, Genie and the Seven Dwarves were all nice and each dwarf was a different shape.
Putting the characters on acetate makes them pop off the board which looks really cool.
Obviously, it’s Disney art and really good.
Ease of Teaching
The game is fairly easy to teach. The actions make sense to a point and most of the game is open information.
Similar Games
I’m not sure of any co-op tile placement games off the top of my head? Any co-op like Pandemic or Marvel United would be comparable at a push.
Disney Animated Review
Positives
The co-op action selection and the amount of table talk required to work out who needs which action is really good.
There is only one ‘enemy’ goal to focus on meaning your time can be spent achieving your goals.
It looks really nice.
Each player’s power is really strong and really useful.
The rotating rogue’s gallery of baddies is interesting.
Negatives
Maybe needs more characters to stay interesting, but there are plenty to choose from if they release any expansions.
While it’s really good, it’s not as ‘fun’ as games like Marvel United.
Summary
A very good game, well worth giving a go.
