How to Play Welcome To…
Round-Up
This is a roll-and-write game, but with cards instead of dice, they call it ‘Flip & Fill’. Usually, I don’t like when they spin the name of a common mechanism to make it sound different. (I’m looking at you bag builders!) But this one is so good I can’t even be mad 🙂
Qwixx is still my favourite. It’s simple, competitive and like Welcome to, everyone acts on every turn. The fact it is so simple is one of the things I like about it.
The ‘Flip’ part makes this game interesting. With dice you’re stuck with a single value showing, you’re also limited by sides. To get the combinations required you could say a Green D20 and a Green D6 with ability symbols. They also have a pair in red and blue and do it that way.
But then you’re not going to have a steady distribution of numbers throughout the game. So it works.
What I like about the Flip part is you can see what the actions are on the next cards, not something you can do with dice.
The ‘board’ is nice. There is a lot of stuff on it. But, it works. The streets, houses, pools and fences are clear. The scoring at the bottom is cramped but easy to read.
The abilities on the cards work well too. It is difficult to pick the ability you need AND the number that’s best for you.
But you can make it work, which is the point I guess. Make it work the best and win.
Rating: I give it 7/10
