Cthulhu Realms is a deck-building game based on a system I am familiar with.
Is the digital version good or did it cause me to lose my sanity?
In Cthulhu Realms, each player tries to reduce their opponents to insanity or have more sanity than their opponents when the deck runs out.
Cthulhu Realms Game Play
A live stream of me running through the tutorial followed by chapter one of the campaign.
Theme
Use the word Madness and that makes it Cthulhu right? I know people say there are too many Cthulhu games etc but just like Zombies, at least they’re not all the exact same style of game.
You destroy buildings by decreasing their sanity, something even the tutorial makes fun of.
Artwork
I like the cartoony look of the game. I did actually have to look to see if the artist is from Penny Arcade ’cause it has a very similar look, but it’s not.
The components look pretty standard.
Cthulhu Realms Summary
Positives
It has the same system as Hero Realms, which is a game I really like.
The tutorial is not only quick and fun but has a good voiceover to make it less boring.
The humour is not just the voiceovers but also the cards is really good!
Negatives
Hard to see which buildings are guards and which are champions (to borrow Hero Realms terminology).
It’s hard to see your opponents cards and you have to keep clicking on them to magnify.
Card effects aren’t that intuitive as is the terminology for different effects. Abjure? What even is that?
A 1 often looks like a 7.
Summary
I’d rank this 3rd behind (1) Hero Realms and (2) Star Realms but it is good fun.
It’s OK to pass a few minutes. Oh, BTW, It’s free (with an in-app purchase to increase the difficulty level) so it’s hard to go wrong.
