Dark Souls: The Card Game First Impressions

Can Dark Souls, a highly acclaimed action RPG video game known for being VERY difficult be transferred into a card game?

See what I think of this game after it’s converted to the tabletop using Deck Building and Hand Management…

Dark Souls is a cooperative deck evolution card game for 1-4 players. Players must explore the Encounters around them, defeating a myriad of enemies to gain Souls and Treasure.

They must use these to evolve and adapt their deck to better fight their enemies. When the players are ready, they must challenge the powerful bosses that lie within.

Dark Souls: The Card Game Review

My first impressions of Dark Souls: The Card Game including a brief overview of gameplay followed by my final summary.

Game Summary

I love it when they convert video games into board games. Some games, like this one, have such a massive background of lore to pick from. In several cases, there is more background material than in many books and film series.

But I like getting the feeling of the game right too. This War of Mine: The Board Game was tense and heartbreaking… XCom: The Board Game was a decent game but didn’t feel like a video game.

I think the Resident Evil Deck Building Game is my favourite 🙂

I think you have to really get this right though. Having a below-average board game with an IP will displease board gamers. Having a board game that doesn’t do a precious video game IP justice displeases video gamers…

Good luck with that!

I haven’t played the Dark Souls video game but I understand it enough to know this seems to get it right. It’s very difficult, it’s tactical, you push your luck etc.  The exploration is there as is the rock-solid combat. I assume the weapons, characters, baddies etc are from the game lore which will please the fans.

The positional gameplay and combat were very tricky. Managing your stamina was tricky too.

The art is the correct style for the video game which again I assume is pulled from the lore.

So overall, if you like the lore of the video game then give this card game a go.
