Fallout Board Game First Impressions

Fallout is a post-apocalyptic RPG video game I’ve barely played…

Here is a board game full of cool stuff and references I don’t get.

But, here’s a video…

This is an overview of the game along with my positives and negatives.

Fallout Update August 2018

So I love a game with a story that unfolds as you go. Especially when it’s a consistent story. T.I.M.E Stories does this really well obviously but that’s a one-shot story. Games like Mansions of Madness does it too and it’s really enjoyable.

But when the plot develops over the game it’s enjoyable to see, especially if it’s a surprise.

The issue with this is if I want to play a story in the Fallout universe I’ll play the video game. I’ve enjoyed the little bits I’ve played of them, new one is out soon so… We’ll see 🙂 (BTW, https://twitch.tv/jestatharogue ;))

Fallout Board

So what makes this board game SPECIAL? (Get it? :))

To be honest, not that much. You move minis around on tiles, collect mini cards and chits and use dice. It’s a Fantasy Flight game after all. It’s similar to but not as good as Runebound for me.

The massive deck of cards to work though is good though. It gives plenty of options for the story to progress in a sensible way.

I didn’t like the scoring. The ‘hidden role’ part is just weird and I don’t like it. I assume it’s thematic to the video game? No idea. But it didn’t make a fun board game for me.

The random/hidden board is good and shows the danger of exploring the unknown. This is especially good due to the radioactive areas that you may not want to go in. It means you have to manoeuvre in a sensible way. It makes sense.

So I wouldn’t play this again.
